Our Intent:
At Sea Mills Primary School we aim to inspire children to be creative. Through a variety of opportunities to explore different types of media, children are able to challenge themselves to reach their own potential within this subject. We encourage them to consider themselves as ‘Artists’ and create their own works of art, craft and design.
Our Art framework embrace the aims and beliefs that are based upon the national curriculum.
We aim to ensure that all pupils can:
- Produce creative work that is subjective to them.
- Become proficient artists by the end of each key stage through opportunities to draw, paint and use sculpture.
- Evaluate and gain knowledge about great artists, craft makers and designers.
Our Approach:
At Sea Mills Primary, every child experiences being an Artist. These opportunities are embedded into termly learning opportunities led through different enquiry units. Each child records different skills in their own personal sketchbooks. The work within these are a reflection of each child’s own designs and show progression throughout their learning journey. They also make and design work that is shared in their classrooms and visible throughout the school in engaging displays of learning.
In Early Years and Key Stage 1 pupils are encouraged to become artists by:
Trying and using a range of materials to explore, design and create.
Drawing, painting and exploring different shades and tones.
Exploring a range of artists and begin to formulate opinions about their work.
In Key Stage 2, Pupils are encouraged to become artists by:
Consolidating and revisiting the use of different media.
Improving their mastery of art and design techniques that include drawing, painting and sculpture.
Proving and consolidating knowledge about great artists and designers and consider their history.

How to help your child at home to become Artists

Gallery
These are our Artist displays, proudly displayed around our school this year. I will continue to add to our Gallery as the academic year progresses.
Year 3 Roy Lichtenstein
Year 3 have been looking at the Artist Roy Lichtenstein. We had a go at creating some food art in his style. The children really enjoyed using dots to make the food pop!

Year 5 Vincent Van Gogh
Year 5 have enjoyed learning all about Vincent Van Gogh as part of our enquiry ‘What does the earth look like from space?’. We studied his famous art works, learnt about his life and then used view finders to study his techniques before creating an artist study of the painting Starry Night.
In Year 5 we have been busy being illustrators. We enjoyed illustrating the main character from our whole school book ‘In Our Hands’ and used watercolours, with a focus on tone and shade, to bring our final illustrations to life.
In year 3, we have been illustrators!
We looked at the book In Our Hands by Lucy Farfort and discussed the layout and themes behind her images. We looked at this image and then planned an alternative ending using illustrations and some words to tell the story. We are all very proud of what we achieved! What do you think?
Year 3 Artists:
Today, too part in a draw along with Lucy Farfort – the author of In Our Hands. The children recreated the image of the main character. Their artwork was amazing and they should be very proud!
Year 6 dragon eyes
Year 3 have been learning about the colour wheel. We used watercolours and mixed them in a variety of ways to find secondary and tertiary colours. When then thought about how these could be sorted into warm and cool colours.
Year 3 have been working on collage techniques and observational drawings. They have been exploring tone.

Window Wanderland Whole School Event 2022
The children across all Key Stages have worked purposefully and with flair to create a beautiful display for the local Window Wanderland art exhibition. Miss Singleton liaised with Sea Mills Surgery again, who very kindly allowed us to showcase our art. Alongside this, some of our pupils also created a display in the Sea Mills Museum with support from the Sea Mills and Coombe Dingle Climate Action Group.
Space
Year 5 have been learning about space. As Artists they have been creating various pieces of art using paint and brushes, collage and multi-media. Amazing!
Graffiti Artists
Year 6 have taken part in a Graffiti workshop run by Sophie and Rob from Graft. They used the graffiti art at Sea Mills Train Station to inspire them to be Artists. They have used stencils and spray paint!
The Fox and The Star
Year 2 were inspired to become artists using the book The Fox and the Star written by Coralise Bickford-Smith. The focused on colour and blending to create the chalk pastel artwork.
