Swimming
At Sea Mills Primary School, we aim to ensure that children are safe, competent and proficient swimmers by the time they transition into secondary school.
The national curriculum states that during Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, in particular, children should be taught.
- to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
- perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
At Sea Mills Primary School, children have 10 hours of swimming in Year 3 and an additional 10 hours in Year 4. During the summer term of Year 6, children will experience a further 10 hours in order to ensure that children are achieving the 25meter distance.
