Term 1 – Scientists
This term, Year 2 have been working as young scientist to answer our enquiry question: What can our classroom be made of?
Our focus has been on identifying and classifying materials. The children have explored the classroom to identify what everyday objects are made from, including wood, plastic. Metal, glass and fabric. They have sorted and classified materials into groups based on their properties, using scientific vocabulary like hard, soft, smooth, waterproof and transparent. We have been asking questions such as: Which things are made from more than one material? Can we group objects in more than one way?
Term 1 – Maths
This week in maths, we have been learning how to partition 2-digit numbers into tens and ones. Partitioning helps children to understand what each digit in a number represents and develops a strong understanding of place value. We support children to develop this understanding through both concrete and abstract representations. Children first use practical resources, such as Dienes/base-ten equipment, to physically build numbers and separate them into tens and ones. This gives children a visual and hands-on understanding of place value before moving towards more abstract representations, such as part-whole models, drawings and number sentences.
