‘English is both a subject in its own right and the medium for teaching; for pupils, understanding the language provides access to the whole curriculum. Fluency in the English language is an essential foundation for success in all subjects.’
DfE (2013) The national curriculum in England, Key stages 1 and 2 framework document, p.10.
For us at Sea Mills Primary School, fluency in English is not just an essential foundation for success in other subjects but is a key tool in establishing success in life. As staff, we have put together our rationale for the teaching of English.
English is a broad subject that encompasses many elements. This includes phonics, reading, writing, handwriting and spelling, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation. These different aspects are taught in approaches appropriate to the age and stage of the child through a combination of discrete and embedded sessions.
